thoughtless : A Short Film By Sean Deosaran
Cinematography and Editing by
Thomas Shomo
Thoughtless stars Levin Valayil, Tiffany McNerlin, and Emily Roldan. The film follows a young man named Rohan who, after an unsettling encounter with a stranger in an NYC subway station, finds out the hard truth about trust and insecurity as he navigates through feelings of betrayal, paranoia, and uncertainty.
Written and directed by Sean Deosaran, the film was a great achievement for us to finish. Sean and I had been making films with DSLR cameras as early as 2010 and this project was our attempt at creating something with entirely no budget, just like the old days. Since moving to NYC, we both have been working on different endeavors and assisting on larger productions. We wanted to relive some of that no-budget, guerrilla style filmmaking we first fell in love with.
Most of our shooting was done with very small crews and we faced a plethora of challenges along the way, but that was to be expected. A lot of productions are filmed in NYC, but not many people talk about the difficulties of crowd control and continuity in such a densely populated and ever changing city.
Thoughtless was shot entirely on the
Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera
using the
Sigma 18‑35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens.
The Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera’s super 16mm digital sensor allowed us to preserve the organic and real-world ambiance surrounding Rohan’s story. The modest colors of this camera combined with the Sigma lens allowed for a very realistic look into Rohan’s world without distraction. Having used many of their cameras, Blackmagic’s color science has really been a joy to work with, even at the prosumer level. We wanted to work with a lot of natural light to get the most mileage out of the look we were trying to achieve.
Thoughtless will make its way to festivals over the coming months and will be available to watch on Vimeo and YouTube after that. We truly hope everyone can enjoy this short film and pull something out of it. We’d also like to give a huge thanks to everyone who contributed their efforts to make this film happen with such a small crew.
